Canadian-Made Stuffed Animals
From wool teddy bears to crocheted woodland animals, Canadian makers create stuffed animals by hand. Each brand brings its own designs, materials and sewing or crochet techniques to its toys. Here are three brands making handmade stuffed animals in Canada and a look at what they offer.
Raplapla — Montréal, Quebec
Raplapla has been making fabric toys in Quebec since 2005. Its plushies are sewn by hand in its Montréal workshop and store. The collection includes Monsieur Tsé-Tsé, a soft character made with organic cotton.
The company also runs a “hospital” for fabric companions, repairing well-loved toys from any brand.
Ouistitine — Montréal, Quebec
Ouistitine makes stuffed animals, dolls and toys by hand using reused natural materials. Its little teddy bear is made in Montréal from repurposed cashmere or wool, with carded wool stuffing. At seven inches tall, it’s a compact option for a gift.
Because the fabrics are reused, each bear can look slightly different. You can also add embroidered personalization.
Bear & Bone — Quadra Island, British Columbia
Bear & Bone’s Woodland Collection includes a deer, raccoon and fox, each crocheted by hand on Quadra Island. These partially stuffed animals are made with soft chenille yarn and measure approximately 16 inches long.
They’re made to order, with an estimated one to two weeks of production time before shipping.
